Severed Head of State is a d-beat/hardcore punk band with members split between Portland, Oregon and Austin, Texas. Band members play in other bands such as World Burns to Death, J Church, Tragedy, WarCry, and Defiance. Their lyrics usually focus on deep detestation of both human nature and the Christian belief system. Their sound ranges from slow melodies to furious thrashcore. Vocalist Jack Control was stabbed in the mid-section late January 2006 with the blow just missing the heart by five inches.01. Abandonment of All Hope

Charles Bronson was a hardcore/thrash band from Dekalb, Illinois. Noted for their use of film/TV samples as postmodern metacommentary within the structure of their music. (The eponymous self-referencing sample comes from Gary Oldman’s character in True Romance.) They played fast and heavy thrash and hardcore along with contemporaries such as MK-Ultra and Social Coma. Their two-disc discography, entitled Complete Discocrappy, was released on Youth Attack Recordings/625 Thrashcore in 2000. Members went on to be in bands like Holy Molar, Das Oath, and Ruination. Contrary to popular thought, only half the band was actually straight-edge.

Ratos de Porão is one of the most important Brazilian punk rock bands, being the punk rock enthusiasts who propelled the advent of Brazilian rock in the ’80s in São Paulo. Appreciated in Europe, they recorded their albums Brasil and Anarkophobia in Berlin, Germany. The group was formed in 1981 by friends who used to hang out at the Punk Rock Discos record store in São Paulo. Their earliest performance for a major audience was in 1982 at the First Punk Festival of São Paulo, aka O Começo do Fim Do Mundo (The Beginning of the End of the World). In that same year, they participated on the collection Sub. After vocalist João Gordo joined the group in 1984, they gradually abandoned their die-hard punk approach for hardcore and then, in 1987 (Vivendo Cada Dia Mais Sujo e Agressivo) to a heavy metal crossover. Also in 1984, they released their first solo album, Crucificados Pelo Sistema. In 1985, they shared a live album with Cólera, and appeared on a British collection of punk bands from around the world, World Class Punk. Having one of the biggest discographies of the Brazilian punk bands, Ratos de Porão were paid tribute in 1998 when several other punk groups, like Verminose, Anões de Jardim, Gangrena Gasosa, and Poindexter recorded their songs on the CD Traidô.01. West Coast thrashers Zeke establishes a nasty disposition while cutting teeth on their own brash hardcore punk. A foursome since 1993, Zeke has released a handful of EPs and full-lengths through Wrecking Ball Records and IFA Records, but inked a deal with Epitaph in 1998. Kicked in the Teeth came up from the vaults to be issued that same year, with Dirty Sanchez following in early 2000. They have also toured with the likes of ALL, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Supersuckers, and Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell.01. T-500

Siege was an American hardcore punk band from Weymouth, Massachusetts. They were active in the 1980s Boston hardcore scene from 1983 to 1985, and reunited briefly in the early 1990s. Siege’s unprecedented level of extreme hardcore punk was some of the fastest and heaviest of its time, incorporing lightning fast tempos, chord changes, vocal delivery, and blast beats into its style, thus setting the stage for the emerging grindcore scene. And though rather short-lived and little-known during their existence, subsequent musicians have cited the group as a profound influence, including the famous British grindcore band Napalm Death and the American powerviolence band Dropdead, whose namesake was derived from the title of Siege’s demo of the same name.01.
